Already have some insulation? You probably won't get a grant.
ECO4 and the Warm Homes Local Grant will not fund loft insulation where there is already more than 100mm in place. That rules out most homes that had insulation fitted under earlier schemes, even though 100mm laid twenty years ago has usually compressed to well under that and is nowhere near the 270mm standard. If you have been told you do not qualify, this is usually why. A top-up is a straightforward job and costs less than a full install.

Price depends on loft area, access, whether the loft is boarded and the condition of any existing material. Damp, compressed or pest-damaged insulation has to come out before new material goes down, and we will tell you that before we quote rather than after.
What we do and why it matters
270mm to current guidance
Part L requires a U-value of 0.16 W/m²K for existing homes, which is roughly 270mm of mineral wool. Typically 100mm between the joists and 170mm laid across them.
Ventilation gap maintained
A 50mm gap between the insulation and the roof underlay has to be kept clear. Insulation does not cause damp; blocked airflow does. This is the detail most often got wrong.
Loft hatch and pipework
Insulating the loft without insulating the hatch and any pipework in the cold space leaves obvious weak points. We quote for both.
Honest about what you have
If your existing insulation is sound and only needs topping up, we say so and quote for a top-up, not a full replacement.
